BENDEL INSURANCE’S MURPHY AKANJI ON THE MOVE

Malta Club doles out N4m for Akanji

By Wale Ajimotokan

Super Eagles goalkeeper Murphy Akanji is now free to join Malta side Sleama Football Club.

Julius Berger of Lagos chairman Chief Daniel Idama yesterday agreed to let the ebullient goalkeeper realise his professional ambition.

The Maltese have paid N4million for Akanji and are awaiting his final clearance by the Nigeria Football Association (NFA).

Idama gave his blessing after getting $40,000 (about N4 million) from Sleama.

The amount represented the Berger’s management asking fee after the Malta side initially offered $20,000 just in excess of N2 million for Akanji.

The goalkeeper who joined Berger three years ago was cleared in presence of his agent who came into Nigeria on

Wednesday.

The deal is reportedly brokered by Eagles coach Shaibu Amodu who similarly facilitated Yakubu Aiyegbeni’s transfer to Israeli side Maccabi Haifa in 1999.

Berger will be parting company with Akanji about three weeks to their champions League group A match against TP Mazembe of Cougo DR.
